The Executive Committee voted to change the name of the family association to Pemberton Family World Wide and to add a new URL to point to its website: pfww.org. Those changes and additions were completed today.

Solicited A Previous Tester to Join Up

I sent emails to Raymond and William C. Pemberton, who had been tested by Family Tree DNA, to add their test results to our project. They are users TBAEK and XWHKK on Ysearch.org.

Donald Pemberton's results are in the Family Tree DNA data base as a member of the Pemberton DNA Project. Also received word today that there will be another test entered in November for sure.

DNA Project Notifications Sent

I just sent the following message to the 19 people who list Pemberton as a Research Interest at Ancestry.com. Hope that stirs up some interest and we get more sample coming in. Looking for efficient ways to let the interested people know about the DNA and One-Nane studies. Here is the message I sent:

I just want to let you know that we have launched a Pemberton DNA project here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/pemberton/

I have submitted my sample to represent my branch of the family. Ideally we will have a least one, preferably two males from each branch submit their DNA samples for testing. The DNA project will be especially helpful to all Pemberton researchers in breaking through "brick walls" because it will be easy to identify very close branches and the wall may thus be approached by coming down another close line to the back side of the wall. This DNA study is an important adjunct to the Pemberton One-Name Study.

First DNA Sample Submitted

Today I sent the first DNA sample (mine) to Family Tree DNA. Meanwhile, my brother informs me that he submitted a sample years ago to the Sorenson DNA lab so it will be fun to see how closely we match. We are all hoping that many others will join in the DNA data base for Pemberton. You can see that project here.

Why Parish Registers Began in 1538

Thomas Cromwell, "Lord Privy Seal, Viceregent to the King's Highness" in the 30th year of the reign of
Henry VIII, in Sept 1538, issued an injunction which said:

"Item, That you and every parson, vicar or curate within his Diocese for every Church keep one Book or Register, wherein he shall write the day and year of every Wedding, Christening, and Burial made within your parish for your time, and so every man succeeding you likewise, and also there insert every persons name, that shall be so wedded, christened, and buried"

Further legislation in 1598, required that all loose-leaf records were to be transcribed into books, especially those entered since the Queen's accession, which explains why so many extant records date from 1558.

On the 25th October 1597, a constitution was issued by the convocation of the archbishop, bishops, and clergy of the province of Canterbury, and approved by the Queen, that directed the more careful keeping of parochial registers, which were for the future to be kept on parchment, and parchment copies were to be made of those old registers which were on paper. It was an ecclesiastical mandate issued in 1603, at the start of the reign of James I, in which is was enacted that a parchment book was to be provided at the expense of the parish in which were to be copied the former paper registers, "so far as the ancient books thereof can be procured, but especially since the beginning of the late Queen".

It has been 23 months since we left here, and it's good to be back. What a wonderful time we had in England and then in visiting all our grandchildren. As soon as we get settled in here, I will be getting back to work on this project. Soon, I hope!!

Registered the Pemberton Surname for a One-Name Study

I joined the Guild of One-Name Studies a couple weeks ago and today took the plunge to register Pemberton and formalise what I had already started - the compilation of all the family history and genealogical data available relating to people with the Pemberton Surname. Luckily, there is no imposed deadline as to when this has to be completed.

My motivation is two-fold: first, I enjoy this sort of work, and extracting data in bulk somehow makes more sense to me than looking for one at a time (maybe a symptom of a vocational disease I contracted years ago), and second, and more important; I have been deeply impressed as I have researched the name and particularly as I have met distant cousins in England, with the kind of people they always seem to be: down to earth, honest, independent, driven by principle more than convenience, and religious. I think it can be a wonderful blessing to thousands of Pemberton, many yet unborn, to know what kind of people they come from and to understand the feelings that course through their hearts as they deal with the vicissitudes of life.

Extracting all Pemberton Events from FamilySearch

Today I am in the Cheshire Parish Registers on FamilySearch. Did a search using no Christian name and Pemberton, all events, 1300 - 1700. I am extracting all Christenings and marriages up to 1690, and burials up to 1700.

The % of Parish Data Now Online in Cheshire

By 1700 there were about 115 parishes in Cheshire. Of these, about 55 are considered key parishes by the extraction/publication program now going on here. Of these 55, 21 are now online, 10 more are nearly ready to publish, and another 10 are in various stages of extration, etc. Since the key parishes are probably the larger ones, it looks like when the project is done, maybe half the total parish records for that period will be published. Finished Lancashire Pemberton Extractions

I completed the extraction work for all Pemberton events from the Lancashire Parishes. Now to examine what I've got.

Cheshire Parish Register Transcription Project

I extracted all the baptisms, marriages and burials for the Pembertons from the earliest records available to about 1760: 469 records. I put them all in a spreadsheet and sorted the data by date, parish, and father's forename which gave me tentative family groups. The database is available here: http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/.

Extracting Pemberton's from Lancashire Parishes

Index to Unindexed Names in Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia

William Wade Hinshaw's incredible Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy project has been a mainstay for years for quaker records research. I recently purchased the entire set of volumes on a CD. Included on the CD was a little file called names.txt which turned out to be a list of names that were never included in indexes. For the most part, these were names that appeared on what I would call "leaves" of the usual pages. For example, page 822 of Volume V has leaves numbered 822a, 822b, etc. Many of these unindexed names were my progenitors so I took the opportunity to create an index of these 3,652 names and publish them here: http://pembertonfamily.com/genealogy/unindexed.shtml.

Starting this Blog

I am creating this blog to publicly record research efforts in a Pemberton one-name study. This is an ongoing project to identify and publish all the Pemberton events from the earliest down to 1850. This end date is arbitrarily set for two reasons:
A) to reduce to the overall project to a reasonable effort, and
B) to protect living Pembertons from easy access to data that could be used by unsavoury people for unworthy purposes.
